SITARAMPUR TRAVELLERS' CAMP – BEST HILL CAMPING DESTINATION NEAR KOLKATA

Purulia is a tropical region of West Bengal. Ajodhya hills of Purulia are a part of the Dalma mountain range and extended part of Eastern Ghats range. Highest peak of Ajodhya Hills is Gorgaburu. Sitarampur Travellers’ and Bikers’ Camp, located just 330 km from Kolkata, is the best weekend gateway for travelers, Bikers, Youtubers, Explorers, photographers and artists. Sitarampur Travelers ‘and Bikers’ Camp will seek inner peace and happiness in the midst of nature, far away from the hustle and bustle and technology surrounded city life.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama and Sita stayed here during their exile. Sita was thirsty and Ram pierced an arrow through the Earth’s soil crust and through that water gushed out. Sita quenched her thirst. The place is known as Sita-kunda. During the full moon day in Baisakh every year tribals of nearby areas come and join in the game of hunting wild animals. It is said that during exile Lord Rama and Mother Sita was in Sitarampur for two days. They lived by building a loft on a tree. From that time the village named as Sitarampur.

With Campfire, you can enjoy traditional Santal Food “Sal Pata chicken” (Excluded from the package). Innumerable stars in the sky and Silent night, fire lamps burning all around you in the dark. You can dine at night and the combined call of night birds, fox and wild dogs in the dense forest will say you good night.

Day 2 :

(Try to wake up early morning within 5:30-6:30am)

In the morning the rooster crowing and the chirping of birds will say you good morning. You will enjoy the magnificent sunrise with morning tea. The pure nature of the dawn will calm your body and mind and you will forget about your daily monotonous routine. You can trek to Ghagheswari Falls or Ghatiali Falls with a local guide (Per Head Rs/- 200 ) and the guide will carry your breakfast. Into the hilly forest, you will have your breakfast and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Trek back to camp and have lunch. After lunch, you can explore nearest off-beat destinations like Thakur Chatan, Lankasid ( Top hill view), Kamar Dhosa, Bali Gada, Nim Dungri, Dhalai Tar ( Switzerland View ), Hud Hud, Bamni Dongri, Jam Tar (360-degree view) or nearest tourist destinations like Upper Dam, Lower Dam, Murguma Dam, Tilaitar Dam, Marble Lake etc.

You will return to the camp after experiencing the amazing sunset and evening solstice in the forest. With evening tea, you can enjoy the camp atmosphere and the enchanting quiet thrilling nature around you. After dinner night birds and the silver moon will say you good night.

Day 3 :

(Try to wake up early morning within 5:30-6:30am)

In the morning you will enjoy magnificent sunrise with morning bed tea from Tara Macha. The pure nature of the dawn will calm your body and mind and you will forget about your daily monotonous routine. You can trek to explore the rest of the nearest off-beat destinations like Hud Hud, Kamar Dhosa with a local guide (Per Head Rs/- 200 ) and the guide will carry your breakfast.

Breakfast in the hilly forest and trek back to camp and have lunch. After lunch, you can explore popular tourist attractions like Khairabera Dam and Khairabera Eco-adventure club, Pakhi Pahar, Gorgaburu Hills, Gajaburu Hills, Chairada Village, Chandii Pahar View Point, Jaychandi Pahar, Baranti, Hanumatha Reservoir, Tarpania Lake, Dungubera Dam Murguma Dam ( Waterfalls + Top Viewpoint ), etc.

You will return to the camp after experiencing the amazing sunset from Murguma Dam ( Waterfalls + Top Viewpoint ) and evening solstice in the lap of Ajodhya hills. Return back to the camp and with evening snacks and tea you can enjoy the camp atmosphere and the enchanting quiet thrilling nature around you. After dinner night birds and the silver moon will say you good night.

Day 4 : 

The next day the rising sun will greet you and with morning tea you will get lost in the quiet generous nature. Then have breakfast and checkout.

    What does the trip package include?

    Far away from city life Sitarampur Travellers’ and Bikers’ Camp mainly focuses on organic living and experience. Once your booking is confirmed we will take care of your Fooding and Lodging. We serve drinking water, Welcome drinks, meals (Lunch, Evening Snacks, Tea, Dinner and Next day Breakfast ) in our campsite and organize Campfire regularly on evening. You can add Chicken Barbeque, Underground Chicken, Chicken Fry, Vej Barbeque etc. by paying extra for that, you have to inform our camp manager in advance. Village hike, Forest heal walk, Trekking to the offbeat waterfalls or Watch Sunrise and Sunset from Tara Macha can be a very good addition to your stay at Sitarampur Travellers’ and Bikers’ Camp. But, don’t forget to take guide while trekking and consult with Camp Manager. Guide cost ₹200 per head.

    In the tent site, we have 3 western toilets with 24 hours of running water. Toilets are clean and hygienic we maintain and clean the toilets regularly.
    In the attached bathroom Travellers’ cottage / hostel, we have 1 attached western toilet. We maintain the hygiene and clean regularly.

    Can we expect electricity in Sitarampur Travellers’ and Bikers’ Camp?

    Right now, we don’t have electricity in Sitarampur Travellers’ and Bikers’ Camp but we have generator service. We have decorated the entire campsite with our trade mark fire lamps/ traditional warm flare lamps on trees (but don’t harm trees) to enhance the night experience. We provide a fan, light and charging point in each tent. We will provide generator service full night from after sunset.

    Can I consume alcohol ?

    Sitarampur Travellers’ and Bikers’ Camp is an adventurous campsite far from regular city life. Alcohol consumption is injurious to health. In the campsite openly or loudly alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited. You can consume in your accommodation. No wine shops nearby. You can taste local organic drinks like Mohul, Rice Beer, etc.

    What is the cancellation policy?

    If trails or camping is called of at the last moment due to natural calamity/ unforeseen circumstances. We will issue a full voucher to participants which they can use in any of our camps or trails in the future.

      All About Sitarampur :

      • History :

      It is said that Lord Rama and Mother Sita was in this village for two days when they came to Ajodhya Hills and stayed during their exile. They lived by building a loft on a tree. From that time the village named as Sitarampur.

      According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama and Mother Sita had come to Ajodhya Hills and stayed during their exile. Sita was thirsty and Ram pierced an arrow through the Earth’s soil crust and through that water gushed out. Sita quenched her thirst. The place is known as Sita-kunda. During the full moon day in Baisakh every year tribals of nearby areas come and join in the game of hunting wild animals

      The Santal (Santhal, Sontal, Sonthal) are the largest tribal community in India.

      Being indigenous to the forest area, they have innate natural and medical knowledge.

      Indigenous Santal, Munda, Kamar, Kurmi-Mahato (they are related to each other), Orang communities live in all the surrounding villages of Sitarampur. The village of Sitarampur is inhabited by the Sing Ghatual community of Munda ethnicity.

      The local language is Kurmali,  Bengali and Hindi are also spoken .

      In Santalism, the highest reverence is for the Court of the Spirit (Bonga), who governs various parts of the world and who is bound by prayer and offerings to prevent evil influences.       The culture in Purulia concentrates on the traditional folk dance ‘Chau’. Charida is a famous village in the Bagmundi for the Chaau masks. Around 150 families are involved in mask-making. Chau represents the local culture. The use of beautiful masks and the exclusive style of dance, make-up and colourful costumes have made this dance popular all over the world. The Chau dance is an inseparable part of the rituals and the festivities of Purulia. Earlier the productions primarily based on mythological stories from the Ramayana, the Puranas etc but presently contemporary issues like Santhal revolt, Kargil war etc are used as themes for the shows.

      • Kartik dance:

      Jhumur songs and dance are popular among Kurmi, Kumhaar, Rajwar, Ghatoal, Hari, Muchi, Dom etc artisan communities and Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Kharia, Birharh like tribes. Jhumur is known for its lyrical and literary significance because of the use of ancient language. Different Jhumur songs are sung at different times of the year. As for example Chaitali is sung in the month of Chaitra (spring), Bhaduria is sung in the month of Bhadra.

      • Karam:

      Karam  is a harvest festival celebrated in many states India like Assam, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal. It is dedicated to the worship of Karam-Devta (Karam-Lord/God). The festival is held on the 11th day of a purnima (Full Moon) of the Hindu month of Bhadra (Bhado), in between August and September. Groups of young villagers go to the jungle and collect wood, fruits, flowers and during this period, people sing and dance together in groups

      • Santal Dance:

      Santal Dance is an another example of traditional folk dance. Santhal dance is generally performed by both the men and women of the Santhali tribe.

      • Jaat (Maa Mansar songs):

      Jaat or Maa Mansha song is an another example of creativity. Jaat mangal / Maa Mansa vakti song is very famous among Purulia district of west Bengal.

      • Tusu: Tusu is a folk festival is a held on the last day of the Bengali month Poush (Makar Sankranti). It is an unifying form of local common faith and the joy of the harvest. Tusu is done vividly and with songs which have a melancholic ring.
      • Wall Painting: Almost every house in the village is made of mud and is skillfully painted on clay and earthen walls. The specialty of this wall painting is that no chemical colors are used and only natural organic colors are used. These traditional tribal paintings are the invaluable examples of Indian culture, heritage and art. However, nowadays the use of chemical colors can also be seen.
      • Art : As a symbol of Bengali village culture places of worship, backyards, walls, courtyards of Hari Macha (a place of pray and chanting), etc., have a tradition to make skillful art called Alpana ( Ingredients of Alpana : Mix rice husks with water ), which is one of the most impressive examples of Bengali tradition and art.
      • Festival : The village puja is celebrated on the twelfth day of the month of Magh in Bengal.

      • Thakur Chatan:

      One of the off-beat destinations of Sitarampur is the Thakur Chatan, located in the shade of dense forest and a lot’s of birds and butterflies are free flying around.

      Reverend Thakur Chatan situated is the combination of reforms and mystery, is one of the claimants of greatness who has been living in the dense forest for thousands of years.

      Elephant infestation is very high in all these areas of Ajodhya Hill like other areas of Purulia. Sitarampur also had elephant infestation many years ago. So the villagers started worshiping in a special way at Chatan (the word Chatan means Wide Stone) in that special place in the forest to avoid the infestation of elephants and other animals and the people here believe that no wild animal infestation was seen in Sitarampur village after the worship of Thakur Chatan. Not only that, no wild animal actually does any harm to the village. It is believed that if there is any defect in the annual worship of Thakur Chatan, wild animal infestation can be seen in the village.

      In the month of Ashwin in Bengal, Naya (who worships) worships in a special way with belpata, atap rice, aola flower (Amalki flower), vermilion, incense, Paite ( Special kind of Yarn used in worships ), nakuldana and many more. It is also customary to sacrifice a white goat in worship.

      Tara Macha is one of the exceptional specialties of Sitarampur Travelers ‘and Bikers’ Camp.

      In the past, wild animals destroy crops and houses. The ancestors of that time used to build Loft on tall trees to keep an eye on the animals. Although there is no use or need for this loft at present. But inside the camp this loft is built on a Palas tree as a historical icon and camp view point.

      Our Vision of Eco-Friendly Tourism

      Imagine standing at a Hill and of plastic cups and packets approaching you! Sounds horrible right? A recent study shows that more than one million Hill birds and 1 lakh marine mammals die every year due to plastic debris.

      Being a Hill camp, Alafiia finds itself responsible to promote eco-friendly tourism and preserve the marine ecosystem. Throwing plastic cups, plates or plastic packets in the Hill or inside the camp is strictly prohibited. we also count for every drop of water and try not to waste as much as we can. Hunting marine animals such as turtles, crabs or hurting birds are something that we strictly condemn.

      Tips to remember

      • Though there are mobile charging facilities available, do bring your mobile power bank to avoid inconveniences.
      • Since it is a remote area, the mobile network is not too strong. (But that adds up the hype of adventure even more! Not always we get a chance to get detached from all chaos going around us.)
      • Do bring a torch with you and always carry it while you are walking along the Hill at night.

      Camp Rules

      • Need a valid ID proof
        • DO NOT OPENLY DRINK ALCOHOLE : Do not openly or loudly consume alcohol. You can consume in your accommodation.
        • DO NOT CONTAMINATE: Sitarampur is an eco-friendly village. It is the duty of all of us as a responsible traveler to keep the environment, nature and rivers clean and tidy.. The use of plastics and contaminants in forests and waterfalls is strictly prohibited. Do not contaminate natural water sources using soap, shampoo, oil or any kind of contaminants. Everyone must abide by the camp rules to preserve the natural significance and maintain the natural beauty of the eco-friendly Sitarampur village. With the joint efforts of all of us, we can preserve our nature and preserve the natural significance and environment of the majestic village Sitarampur. If we try, we can gift a beautiful world to our future generations.
        • USE DUSTBIN: It is strictly forbidden to throw any kind of garbage anywhere in the village. Everyone has an appeal to throw garbage only in dustbins. Villagers have made dustbins with their own effort for all of us. Only we can succeed this effort to save Sitarampur. Now a days pollution is an incurable disease but it can be prevented. So we all have to take responsibility for protecting Sitarampur’s environment as a responsible traveler and violating this may cause punishment.
          • ALWAYS TAKE GUIDE: Sitarampur is an adventurous weekend hill camping destination for travellers’ and bikers’. Hilly roads, uneven landscape, rocky terrain and deep forest on step by step. Even a little carelessness here can lead to extreme hazard. There is also the fear of losing the way in unknown hill forest. Moreover, a slight mistake can cause life risk. So be sure to take the Guide before going anywhere.
            • RETURN BETWEEN 6PM AND CONSULT WITH CAMP MANAGER: All are requested to return camp by 6 pm and if there is no activity (Like night walk) from us, please not to go outside the camp premises and consult with the camp manager to avoid any uncertainty. It is advisable to consult with the camp manager to avoid any contingency while leaving the camp.
            • FIRE PRECAUTION INSIDE TENT (Caution for your safety) : Do not smoke inside the tent. Kindly go outside for a smoke. Candles too not allowed within the tents. Do not place hot appliances near the walls roof or curtains.
            • THINGS TO REMEMBER : Sitarampur is an adventurous place and welcome to adventure here. But there are many things to keep in mind, always be aware and follow the instructions of guide. Carry torch, water bottles and dry food. Nearest super specialty hospital in Purulia city.
