Who are the Lepchas?

The Lepcha people in Kalimpong have been living mostly in the remote villages of far-flung areas with extreme inconvenience in communications and therefore are extensively dependent on the locally available natural resources. They have been believing, retaining and practicing their centuries old knowledge on plants and use them more effectively than the modern allelopathic drugs. It is now utmost important need and task to conserve the traditional knowledge on plant based medicines of these people as the world is now gradually becoming more inclined on plant based traditional medical systems and for this India is a very rich center. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system is mostly plant-dependent and is not isolated from other such system developed in this sub-continent. In presently prevailing socio-economic conditions, numerous of our discomforts could be relieved by following herbal medicines over chemical/synthetic drugs. Lepchas are the most ancient people in Darjiling and Sikkim part of the Eastern Himalayas and it is now very much important to record and scientifically evaluate their medical system at the earliest.

Gidang Hanging Bridge

Explore

One of the specialties of Gidang is the GIDANG HANGING BRIDGE. The GIDANG HANGING BRIDGE was built in 2019 on a government initiative above the Gheesh River flowing in its own stream below. This hanging bridge connects Gidang on the other side of the Gheesh river and Affate, Pokhrebong on the another. Although its costume name is SUSPENSION BRIDGE, but it is known as GIDANG HANGING BRIDGE to the local people. This bridge has facilitated the movement and livelihood of the people of the two hills separated by the river (Gheesh). This bridge is used for walking only, no bikes are allowed here. Leaving the Gheesh flowing below, you can stand on this bridge and admire the magnificent beauty of Gidang – the enchanted green beauty of the Himalayas. The light sway of the hanging bridge can also cause a slight shiver in your body, but the sound of flowing water and the swaying of the hanging bridge will give another greatness to your Gidang adventure.
